About Me
I have been a dog trainer for 22 years working with all breeds of dog in many different areas from pet dog training, to behaviour consultations, sheepdog training and sheep socialisation. My experience has primarily developed through watching and studying adult dogs and puppies and where possible adopting a silent and calm approach. It is only too easy, when faced with a problem, to assume that the the dog is always at fault however this can never bring about success. I prefer to look at my own failings and if my dogs make a mistake then I assume that I must have played a part in this. My approach to dog training is characterised by placing a greater emphasis on understanding rather than change and looking at the training process as a partnership.
My first love is of Border Collies which I have worked and trained for 25 years and since competing in my first sheepdog trial in 1992 I have obtained success all over the UK and have also represented England a International level. I have been blessed with some great dogs but always look forwards to new challenges and new methods of working with dogs and their owners.
Bertie Dog Training was formed 21 years ago with the following aims in mind, to offer a simplified and common sense approach to pet dog owners, to maintain a friendly atmosphere where humour was an essential ingredient. We consider Bertie to offer a truly unique training experience and our client testimonials support this. Our success over many years has been built on providing a structured and individual program of training with support to our clients always on tap. In short we owe our success to our members who have remained loyal over two decades.
We have enjoyed an excellent reputation both locally and nationally and without the support of my wife Jo, my daughter Laura, Dean Curtis, Marie Jordon, Kamil Simpson and Julie Wright we would remain just another ordinary dog training club. These trainers provide a professional and consistent training experience and their skills have been developed through practical hard work and dedication.
Bertie has enjoyed regular publicity from local and national press, television and radio. We also have a high profile working in the community and have an an active program of work with schools and colleges. We also have three training venues In Oadby,Church Langton and Stonton Wyville. It is hoped that in the very near future we will open a 4th venue in North Leicestershire.
In July 2010 my first book "Sheepdog Training and Trials was published by Crowood Press and feedback from both Border Collie owners and competitors as wells as owners of other dog breeds have remarked how useful the book as proved in managing their dog's behaviour. It is now my intention to write a second book on dog training which will appeal to all dog owners.
Currently I own six Border Collies: Fly-Spot-Mac-Skye-Tess and Jake. The future as they say is bright!
